Vegan Friendly Broth Powder

Over the years I have used a couple low-sodium, vegan friendly broth powders, some that I buy and others that I make.

I revisited it recently, using my Vitamix 5200 Blender to make an ultra-smooth powder. I use this mix for both hiking meals and at home. If you follow my personal blog you know of my desire to move off processed foods – hiking food has been the hardest, I won’t lie about that. At home I have the freedom of time to cook 3 meals a day, make bread daily, etc…but hiking is different. I have to think everything out differently, especially with a family of 5. In the past I used commercially prepared low-sodium mixes or I carried the broth packets (such as Trader Joe’s carries).  But….it doesn’t fit into how we live now and I take my mission pretty seriously. I replicate what I can, adapting ideas till they work.

And it can be done, that is….living less processed, even while hiking. A dehydrator makes it quite easy, so one can enjoy whole grains and vegetables. Anyways, back to the topic! Lets make broth powder! It can be used in many things, such as with rice and couscous dishes, in soup, sprinkled on popcorn, on pasta as a topping….pretty unlimited really. You will need to add salt to your meals, but hat is a good thing. You can use how much you need, instead of a heavily salted powder that has sketchy “natural flavors”, GMO products and preservatives. PS: Even hikers need a well stocked pantry of spices and herbs! It is your friend!


Vegan Friendly Broth Powder


  • 1 1/3 cups Large Flake Nutritional Yeast
  • 2 Tbsp onion powder (not onion salt!)
  • 1 Tbsp granulated garlic
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • 1 tsp dried rubbed sage
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • ½ tsp ground turmeric
  • ½ tsp dried parsley
  • ¼ tsp celery seed


Add the ingredients into a dry mixing container for a Vitamix 5200 Blender or any high-speed blender –

Process on high until smooth (takes less than 30 seconds). If using a normal blender it will take a bit longer.

Store in an airtight container. Use 1 Tablespoon dry mix per cup of water.

Makes about 12 Tablespoons dry mix.
