Quick hearty ramen noodles.
| 3 | oz | pack ramen (any flavor) |
| 1⁄4 | c | shelf stable bacon |
| 1⁄4 | c | shelf stable parmesan cheese |
| 1⁄2 | t | granulated dried garlic |
| 1⁄4 | t | red pepper flakes |
| 1⁄4 | t | ground black pepper |
| 1 | T | olive oil (1 packet) |
| 1 1⁄2 | c | water |
Use any ramen brand/flavor as the 'flavor' packet is discarded. If you can find baked ramen or chuka soba noodles use them instead.
Find shelf stable bacon often in the salad dressing aisle or meat department of most grocery stores.
Olive oil packets can be found online through www.minimus.biz and www.packitgourmet.com
Dry weight: 6 ounces
At home:
Combine the bacon, cheese and seasonings in a snack size zip top bag. Tuck the pack of ramen and oil packet with it. If doing the recipe FBC style pack the ramen in a quart freezer bag (discard the 'flavor' packet for all 3 methods).
In camp:
Freezer Bag method:
Bring the water to a near boil and pour over the pasta. Seal tightly and put in a cozy for 5 to 10 minutes. Drain off the water and toss with the oil and then the seasoning bag.
Insulated mug method:
Break up the ramen, add to a large mug. Add boiling water, cover tightly and let sit for 5 to 10 minutes. Drain off the water and toss with the oil and then the seasoning bag.
One pot method:
Bring the water to a boil in your pot and add in the ramen. Cook for 3 minutes, drain off remaining water carefully and toss with the oil and then the seasoning bag.

Bacon + Cheese Pasta a big hit!
For all my wilderness trips I bring pre-packaged dehydrated meals purchased from my local outfitter. And then I discovered your recipes....woo-hoo! What a welcome change.
On my last 2 week canoe trip I brought the store-bought meals for 9 dinners and 4 dinners from your recipes. After having tried the meals from your recipes, when I would ask my canoeing partner what he wanted for dinner, every night he asked if I had any of yours left. This one was a big hit!
I just ordered your book and can't wait to start trying the recipes.
Thanks for generously sharing your recipes here.
Delicious!
Tried this recipe this past weekend. I both did it as you listed it on the site, as well as modifying the recipe to replace the ramen with whole wheat rotini, and the spice mixture with simple prepared garlic paste, and in both cases it was pot licking clean. I used the one-pot method for this recipe. Mmmmm.
I used shelf-stable shaved - rather than grated - paremsian, which was actually cheaper at the grocery store I went to. I found that the shaved melted much better than I've ever experienced with grated.
Winner
This was great. It will be a staple on my trips.
Great Recipe
I used this on a recent canoe trip and when I asked my son, who is a picky eater, if it was OK, he said, "No, it's really good." I agree.
